PhD program

Computer Engineering provides a high quality PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) program for students with superior caliber who are willing to pursue rigorous research in one of our research themes: Dependable Nano-Computing (Nano Deco), Multi/Many Core (MMC) and Electronic System Design (ESD). You will be trained to become the next generation of leading researchers and teachers in the field of Computer Engineering. You will not only receive training on how to conduct fundamental research and how to bridge research to practice, but also on other skills as well including professional, personal, interpersonal and business.

There are NO tuition fees for PhD study provided by Computer Engineering.

Scholarships

As indicated in the Financial Information section there are NO tuition fees for PhD students. Consequently scholarships relate only to salaries. If you got accepted in the computer engineering program there are the following possibilities:

  1. Accepted with no scholarship.
    The student will provide by him/her self (living, traveling, insurance etc.) financing. Please note that the student is responsible to provide the financing for the duration of the program which is four years.
  2. Accepted with a scholarship from the industry.
    We will welcome people that would like to do part-time/full-time PhD studies while working. In case you and your work are accepted in pursuing a PhD, it is understood that all your expenses are paid by your employer.
  3. Accepted from university scholarships.
    These scholarships are infrequent. A specific salary for four years is provided to the student.
  4. Accepted with a research assistantship.
    Research assistantships are given to the group on the basis of an accepted research proposal. The fund comes generally from science foundations (EU, and NL) and industries (EU or wide). Such scholarships are provided with a salary for four years. They are given immediately based on the qualifications of the candidates.
  5. Accepted with a scholarship given by an organization.

Knowledge of English is sufficient to communicate and socialize since almost all adults in the Netherlands speak good English.

Admissions

Admission Requirements

In order to apply for a PhD in Computer Engineering you have to have one of the following degrees:

  • Master of Science (MSc) in Computer Engineering (EE)
  • Master of Science (MSc) in Computer Science (CS)
  • Master of Science (MSc) in Electrical Engineering (EE)

Non Dutch University degree holders: In case you have a Master of Science (MSc) from a foreign country then the following also applies:

  • Be at least at the top 25% of your graduating class in terms of Grade Point Average (GPA) for the Master of Science (MSc) studies.
  • For applicants whose mother tongue is a language other than English and who did not follow all secondary and tertiary education in English: You have to prove that you speak fluent English.

Dutch University degree holders: If you have a Master of Science (MSc) from a University in the Netherlands then please contact the PhD program coordinator (see below).

The Selection Advisory Committee will decide in individual cases whether there are exceptional circumstances that justify deviating from one or more of the selection criteria listed above.

Application Procedure
